In AS 1288 and related standards, testing of balustrades and glass balustrades verifies the strength of materials and confirms that the overall system will continue to provide the necessary protective function under actual use conditions. These tests cover geometric constraints, local and global load-bearing behavior, and post-failure system performance to ensure that the balustrade meets design and safety requirements under normal use, accidental concentrated forces and extreme conditions.

AS 1657 is the design and safety standard for fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders, and is intended to ensure safe access and fall prevention. The standard specifies the height of the guardrail, the spacing of the railings and the load-bearing requirements. When Ultimate strength test glass guardrails or fall-proof structures are involved, they are often used together with AS 1288 and the safety glass standard.
